Julia Heine-Saabel is a painter and sculptor from Canada with a classical training in the visual arts. She lived and worked there for over twenty years, completing her artistic training at renowned art colleges in Vancouver and Montréal. Her intensive engagement with the North American art scene, as well as the dialogue between European and Canadian artistic traditions, have had a lasting influence on her artistic development and her distinctive style. Julia Heine-Saabel has been living and working in Europe again since 2000. After several years in Frankfurt am Main, she initially moved to Switzerland and later also to the Côte d’Azur. Today, she creates her works between these two inspiring regions, where she exhibits regularly and continually develops her artistic practice. As a board member of the women artists’ group Dames d’Art in Nice, she is also actively committed to cultural exchange and the promotion of contemporary art by women. Thematically, her paintings and sculptures revolve around questions of transformation, femininity and creative power. Inspired by symbolism, mythology and alchemical concepts, she creates sculptures that visualise inner processes of development and conceive of the female body as the vessel of universal experiences. The works oscillate between figuration and abstraction, inviting the viewer to form their own associations. Julia Heine-Saabel sees her art as a poetic exploration of spiritualism and metamorphosis – a constant process of change that shapes the human condition just as much as it does nature itself.
