Marika has been photographing since living in London in 1990, where she began documenting everyday life in the city. Classically trained in photography, she has experience in both the studio and the darkroom, but her work is primarily made outdoors. Her photography focuses on the relationship between architecture, landscape and everyday life. She is
interested in places that are often overlooked and in how time, weather and human activity leave visible traces in the built environment. Rather than searching for exceptional locations, she photographs ordinary places with care and attention.
This submission is connected to her Passing By series, photographed in Scotland. The series explores the Highlands and beaches under overcast skies, where sea, architecture and
weather create a restrained visual language. Within this work, blue is present both as a colour and as an atmosphere, reflecting the quiet character of these landscapes rather than a symbolic idea. Marika’s work is driven by observation. She aims to show that everyday places deserve the same attention as locations that are traditionally considered beautiful or significant.
