Biografia

Nikheel Aphale is a Mumbai-born calligraphy artist based in Bangalore, India. He holds a master’s degree in graphic design from the National Institute of Design, India. Trained under text artist Brody Neuenschwander and inspired by his mother’s handwriting to hand-painted signs to cinema and theatre titles, he transforms Devanagari script into contemporary art, exploring gesture, rhythm, and spiritual form. Working with ink, paper, and unconventional tools, Aphale investigates humanity through memory, regional literature, cultural encounters, and social history. He deconstructs Devanagari letterforms, modulating legibility, scale, and space to create a visual language that resonates across cultural boundaries. His exhibitions and residencies include Hampi Art Labs x India Paper Triennale, Kalligraphie – Dialogues encrés entre l'Inde et la France, Material Matters at Gujral Foundation, Auroville Art Residency, and One Asia Project in Taipei. He received the Excellence in Calligraphy award at the Jikji International Calligraphy Exhibition in South Korea. His achievements include a commissioned artwork for India’s Parliament building and the ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ title for the G20 logo. Featured in Letter Arts Review, Slanted Magazine, Vogue, Letter Exchange, and Robb Report, his works are held in private and corporate collections worldwide. A TEDx speaker, he speaks at calligraphy festivals and teaches at design colleges across India.
