This work explores the fragility of human relationships – the visible and hidden traces left behind by encounters and shared experiences. The textured background, created with acrylic paint and fine sand on paper, forms a rough, translucent surface. It symbolises the layers of our lives: shaped by memories, hurts and moments of connection. The light, understated colours leave room for silence and draw the eye to what is essential – to what develops between people and often remains unspoken.
The three fragile twigs represent three distinct life paths. They run parallel, drawing closer and then drifting apart again, without losing their individuality. Between them unfolds a network of delicate papers bearing calligraphic fragments of text. The papers connect the twigs, overlapping them whilst simultaneously forming fragile spaces between them. They represent memories, thoughts and words – both what is said and what is left unsaid. The writing remains only fragmentarily legible and eludes any unambiguous interpretation. In this way, it alludes to everything that shapes relationships, without ever being fully articulated or understood.
This work does not view relationships as rigid bonds between people, but as a multi-layered network of mutual influences. Here, closeness arises not solely through physical contact, but through shared experiences, memories and what remains between the lines.
‘Layer upon Layer – We II’ invites us to perceive the subtle connections between people – their vulnerability as well as their resilience. It is not about telling a specific story, but about opening up a space for associations. For relationships consist of many layers: visible and hidden, light and burdensome, fleeting and yet of lasting significance.
