The Threshold – The Fool Self Portrait
Is inspired by the archetype of The Fool, the first card of the tarot and the beginning of every journey.
“The threshold is not simply a place we cross; it is a state of being, where the person we have been quietly gives way to the person we are becoming.”
The photograph originated during a climb to Knoll Bluff in Western Australia in 2023. Standing at the mountain’s edge after a steep ascent, I was struck by the feeling of arriving at a place that was both an ending and a beginning—a liminal space where possibility outweighed certainty.
In this reimagined work, I am joined by my beloved cat, Samson, who is my guardian and companion. Samson represents instinct, protection and the quiet wisdom that guides me when logic can no longer lead the way.
Rendered with a chrome-like finish, the figures become reflective rather than fixed. They mirror both the viewer and the limitless potential that exists beyond what is already known.
Reflection becomes transformation, inviting us to consider not only who we are, but who we might become.
The precipice is not a place of danger, but of invitation, it marks the threshold between the familiar and the unknown, where faith begins before certainty exists.
Like The Fool, we are called to step forward with curiosity rather than fear, trusting that the path reveals itself only after we commit to the journey.
