Artist Denita Benyshek underwent a traditional Naerim Gut initiation ritual with three South Korean shamans. Before an exhibit opening, Benyshek performed the ritual, Calling Down the Gods, to connect the audience with the art spirit. Using images from the ritual combined with art, the artist-shaman created a series of photo montages to provide the viewer with a glimpse of the experience, an invitation to enter into relationship with the art spirit. As the ritual progresses, the artist-shaman looks upward and sees a vision. Floating away from the framed artwork, a Radiant Being exists in the same time-space as the artist, providing inspiration.
