The androgynous figure of the angel Mercury embodies this mediating role. Mercury symbolises creative power, transformation and the union of opposites. He becomes a kind of spiritual mediator between the worlds. The double wings reinforce the spiritual dimension. They make visible the angel’s ability to move between different planes. At the same time, they represent freedom, insight and the overcoming of the limits of the purely material. The angel thus becomes a symbol of the human longing to make contact with a higher or hidden reality. At the heart of the painting lies the question of what might exist beyond visible reality. The flowing forms in the painting emphasise this idea. They dissolve, merge with one another and transform into new forms. This creates the impression of a world in which nothing is definitively fixed and the boundaries between different states become permeable. The intense red colour flows through the painting like a living, supernatural energy. In my painting, this colour becomes both an expression of spiritual power and inner awakening. It connects the physical, sensual presence.
