Tiina Herttua is a Finnish visual artist whose practice explores the relationship between humans, nature, and society,
\ninformed by art historical context and visual research. She abstracts her subjects through a visual language that retains
\nsubtle allusions to representational forms, often using natural pigments, alongside oil and acrylic to strengthen the
\nconnection between material, place, and meaning.
\nIn recent years, Herttua\u2019s research-driven practice has focused on landscape painting, engaging with the genre not only
\nas a motif but also as a site of emotional, spatial and experiential investigation. Her paintings aim to evoke a sense of
\nexperiential sublimity\u2014rooted in the Romantic tradition of the sublime that first elevated landscape from a backdrop to
\na subject in its own right. Her paintings often originate from impressions, memories, and close observation of specific
\nplaces, light, and color, which she simplifies and reflects upon, leaving space for the viewer\u2019s interpretation. She
\nfrequently works \u2018en plein air\u2019 \u2013 outdoors, particularly in the Mediterranean, where natural light becomes both a
\nmethodological and conceptual condition of her work.
\nHer layered landscapes operate as temporal palimpsests: strata of paint conceal and reveal the motif, binding the
\nlandscape to time, place, and history. In these works, material, perception, and memory intersect, creating landscapes
\nthat are not static but accumulated, lived, and historically resonant. This approach positions her paintings as both
\nexperiential and conceptually rich sites of engagement.
\nHerttua\u2019s works have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Finland, across Europe, and internationally in Japan,
\nAustralia, Russia, and the United States. Her work has been included in curated exhibitions such as ClimateNordic
\nExpressions (Rebildcentre, Denmark, 2019), Pozna\u0144 Art Week (2021), and Momentum Gallery, Krak\u00f3w (2022) and
\nthey have been acquired private and public collections, including the collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
\nFinland, Embassy of Finland in Namibia.
\nHerttua graduated from the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts and is a member of the Finnish Painters\u2019 Union and the Artists\u2019
\nAssociation MUU. She has received numerous grants and awards and has over 30 years of experience in the visual arts
\nfield. Alongside her artistic practice, she has been actively involved in art associations, international community art
\nprojects, and art symposiums.
