In my sculpture \u201eGuardian of Wisdom\u201c, the figure of Mercury, the messenger of the gods, hovers above a tall vessel. His appearance is deliberately androgynous. This transforms the figure into a symbol of the overcoming of human dichotomies and of a higher, holistic existence. At the same time, his appearance is reminiscent of a spiritual being who mediates between the material world and an invisible spiritual reality.
\nIn the context of spiritualism, the vessel forms a kind of liminal space \u2013 a place where the visible and the invisible meet. As an archetypal form, it represents the feminine: receptivity, protection, preservation and the ability to take in something invisible and make it visible. The gold concealed within the vessel symbolises spiritual light, insight and wisdom. It alludes to the idea that the deepest insight is not to be found on the surface. It lies hidden within and must be uncovered through perception, intuition and engagement with the invisible.
\nThorns sprout from the surface of the vessel. They can be understood as a symbol of the difficulties encountered on the path to insight. Encountering the invisible is not exclusively associated with enlightenment and harmony; it can also entail uncertainty, doubt and confrontation with unknown realms of one\u2019s own consciousness. At the same time, the thorns protect the gold hidden within.
