Artist Denita Benyshek underwent a traditional Naerim Gut initiation ritual with three South Korean shamans. Before an exhibit opening, Benyshek performed the ritual, Calling Down the Gods, to connect the audience with the art spirit. Using images from the ritual combined with art, the artist-shaman created a series of photo montages to provide the viewer with a glimpse of the experience, an invitation to enter into relationship with the art spirit. This work features the artist’s painted doors from her house in the Cascade Mountains.
