Descrizione: This work was created at a time when hundreds of thousands of women were moving through Poland—visible as a mass, invisible as individuals. Within a single week, over a million people crossed the border. Most of them were women, their stories dissolving into statistics, into movement, into the necessity of survival.
I draw on an archival image of an anonymous Ukrainian woman from the early 20th century—a figure without a name, without a story, a representation of “culture” that has long been aestheticized, simplified, and detached from lived experience. This image repeats itself today: women once again become a collective figure—the refugee, the worker, the background.
Embroidery—a medium associated with silence, repetition, and the private sphere—is used here as a form of resistance to this anonymity. Each stitch is an act of slowing down against the urgency of history. Each line is an attempt to restore individual experience where numbers dominate.
This is not a portrait. This is the absence of a name.

Quest’opera nasce in un momento in cui centinaia di migliaia di donne attraversavano la Polonia—visibili come massa, invisibili come individui. In una sola settimana, oltre un milione di persone ha superato il confine. La maggior parte erano donne, le cui storie si dissolvevano nelle statistiche, nel movimento, nella necessità di sopravvivere.
Attingo a un’immagine d’archivio di una donna ucraina anonima dei primi del XX secolo—una figura senza nome, senza storia, una rappresentazione di “cultura” a lungo estetizzata, semplificata e separata dall’esperienza reale. Questa immagine si ripete oggi: le donne tornano a essere una figura collettiva—rifugiate, lavoratrici, sfondo.
Il ricamo—medium associato al silenzio, alla ripetizione e alla sfera privata—viene qui utilizzato come forma di resistenza a questa anonimizzazione. Ogni punto è un atto di rallentamento contro l’urgenza della storia.
