Women’s Ward
Tecnica: Cyanotype on glass, contact printed from a photographic negative using UV light exposure.
Anno: 2026
Dimensione: 18 x 13 cm
Descrizione: This cyanotype on glass is made from a photographic negative of a hospital room I occupied following the loss of a pregnancy at 19½ weeks. Because the loss occurred before the threshold recognized by the hospital’s maternity unit, I remained in a shared women’s ward, separated from other patients only by a curtain. The image records a space that was both intensely present and already receding into memory.
Using the light-sensitive cyanotype process, the room is transformed into a fragile blue trace. The hospital bed, curtain, chair, and surrounding objects remain visible, yet their meanings have shifted. What once functioned as medical infrastructure becomes a repository of memory, grief, and absence.
The curtain takes on a symbolic role beyond its practical purpose, becoming a threshold between public and private grief, presence and absence, recognition and obscurity. The work reflects on how institutional spaces can both contain and conceal experiences that resist easy categorization.
Printed on glass, the image exists between appearance and disappearance. Its transparency echoes the instability of memory, while the cyanotype’s dependence on light transforms a personal experience into a material trace. Hospital Room explores how spaces retain emotional residues long after events have passed, and how photography can serve as an act of remembrance.
