What does it mean to capture a photograph without a camera? This series subverts the digital flatbed scanner, turning a standard office tool into an alternative photographic engine capable of generating raw, purely abstract images.
During the duration of the scan, colored papers and heavily textured materials are shifted by hand directly across the glass. The resulting blurs, physical drags, and density shifts occur entirely in real time, intersecting human gesture with mechanical motion. The final pieces remain completely untouched by later digital manipulation, operating as intense studies of abstract form, rhythm, and pure materiality.
This process mirrors what theorist Diarmuid Costello calls “constructed abstraction.” Rather than documenting a prior reality, these spaces are built from the ground up through mechanical friction. The scanner functions as a drawing tool, light becomes paint, and time serves as the canvas. In a visual landscape saturated with over-polished, artificial images, Blind Exposures claims an independent space between photography, painting, and machine vision, proving that a digital image can still be a deeply physical, tactile, and urgent event.
