Dörthe Fiwek is a calligrapher who lives on the edge of the Black Forest / Germany. Her work focuses in particular on the theme of ‘traces of life’. The unifying element in her works are letters, or fragments thereof. She describes her work as ‘the art of writing’, because calligraphy is the ‘art of beautiful writing’, yet she does not always necessarily wish to write ‘beautifully’. She is more interested in the fascination of the forms and movement hidden within letters. The result does not necessarily have to be legible; rather, she aims to encourage the viewer to reflect through her use of forms and textures.
As our memories are often intertwined with language, she incorporates words and sentences into her art. Her work reflects the cycle of life. She also enjoys incorporating found, weathered objects and works with layers and gaps that represent faded or overlapping memories and traces.
