The photo is slightly overexposed; the man and woman are looking directly into the camera, the sun making them squint. There is something unspoken between them; despite their closeness, there is a distance, something left unsaid, something hidden. Several images were created using pigments and stamp prints. The blue wool thread was added later, as a symbol of their years of silence. It is a room installation: suspended in the middle of the room, visible from the front and back. Two sides -
Karin Christen Tecnica: Mixed textiles, painted, embroidered, sewn, with appliqués Anno: 2023 Dimensione: 150 x 80 cm Descrizione: I used an old black-and-white photo as a reference; it shows my grandmother and my mother in the early 1940s. Since my grandfather, a Frenchman, was at war and couldn’t come home for five years, they had their picture taken at a studio and sent it to him. Using carefully selected fabrics, I recreated the image in color through painting and embroidery. I was inspired by the dresses, hairstyles, and the staging in the photo studio, as well as my mother’s porcelain-doll face. The care and craftsmanship should be felt and seen in the image.
